Tips for NDIS Goal Setting

By Home Care Heroes Team • January 10, 2019

With the New Year well underway, it’s a great time to think about what you want to achieve this year, and how you’re going to achieve it – a great time to set some goals!

Goals describe what you want to achieve, develop or learn. Goal setting gives you direction, keeps you focused and motivated, and increases your chances of achieving what you want.

Tips for NDIS Goal Setting

An easy way to set some goals is to think about what’s important to you – what activities do you enjoy doing? How you spend your day? And what supports do you need for your these activities?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides people with disability greater choice and control to achieve their goals and future aspirations. During your NDIS planning meeting, the planner will talk to you about the goals you want to achieve across many aspects of your life. This is because an NDIS plan is based on goals, and supports will only be funded if they help you meet these goals. So it’s important to set your goals and write them down for any conversations you have with the NDIS.

Examples of Goals for Children might include:

  • Developing social skills to make friends,
  • Building skills such as coding, or learning to use spreadsheets, or
  • Developing communication skills to express yourself.

For Adults, some Goals could be:

  • Becoming more independent
  • Doing more social and recreational activities
  • Becoming more involved and engaged in the community
  • Improving your health and wellbeing, or
  • Learning a new skill
