Introducing Melinda; our first Hero to be celebrated as part of our brand new 'Meet the Family' series. We’re excited to bring you guys wins, stories, tips and words of advice, from one Hero to another!
Tell us a little about yourself and your Home Care Hero experience!
Hi, I’m Mel and been with Home Care Heroes since January 2018. I love being able to help people reach their personal goals and towards maintaining or gaining independence. I am also a Scout Leader/Leader-in-Charge of a disability scout group in Sydney. All up, I’ve been working with disabilities for nearly 10 years and behavioural therapy since about 2004/5.
What are your top tips for other Heroes?
- Make sure you have a back up Hero for your clients that they are confident with and know. Get to know the Heroes in your area, as you never know when you might get sick or need a holiday. Your clients will appreciate the continuity of care and this puts them in control!
- Listen to your clients. If they have communication difficulties, try picture cards, Keysign or Auslan. There are many resources available on the internet to help. Be patient and empathise by imagining what you would like in their situation.
